Matthew 3:11 meaning and explanation

I baptize you with water for repentance, but after me will come One more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

Matthew 3:11, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

John the Baptist is speaking to the Pharisees and Sadducees who came to his baptism in the Jordan, and he contrasts his own ministry with the mightier One to come. John's water baptism seals repentance, but he is unworthy even to carry that One's sandals, the work of the lowest servant.
