After John the Baptist is imprisoned, Jesus withdraws to Galilee and begins his public ministry in Capernaum, fulfilling Isaiah's promise of light dawning on a people in darkness. Verse 23 summarizes that ministry in three activities: teaching in the synagogues, local gathering places for prayer and Scripture; preaching the gospel, or good news, of the kingdom; and healing every disease and sickness.
