But I tell you not to resist an evil person. If someone slaps you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also;

Jesus is speaking to his disciples on the mountain, continuing the series of contrasts where he sets his own teaching alongside what his hearers had heard from the Law. The law of retaliation in verse 38 limited revenge; here Jesus goes further and tells his followers not to resist an evil person, illustrating with a slap on the right cheek, a backhanded insult rather than a mortal blow.
