Matthew 5:48 meaning and explanation

Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Matthew 5:48, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Jesus speaks these words at the close of the Sermon on the Mount, summing up the teaching he has just given his disciples on the mountain. The Greek word teleios means complete, mature or whole rather than flawless, and the parallel in Luke reads "be merciful, just as your Father is merciful." The command rests on what God is like, not on human achievement.
