For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.

Jesus speaks these words near the close of the Sermon on the Mount, addressing the crowd of ordinary hearers and disciples gathered on the hillside. Verse 8 grounds the commands of verse 7 in a promise: asking, seeking and knocking are not wasted effort, because God answers those who come to him.
