Micah 1:15 meaning and explanation

I will again bring a conqueror against you, O dweller of Mareshah. The glory of Israel will come to Adullam.

Micah 1:15, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Micah speaks to Judah in the late eighth century BC as Assyria threatens the land. Mareshah was a fortified town near Micah's own home region, and its name sounds like the Hebrew word for conqueror, so the line carries a bitter wordplay: the town named for possession will be possessed by an invader.
