The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD is avenging and full of wrath. The LORD takes vengeance on His foes and reserves wrath for His enemies.
Nahum 1:2, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
Nahum opens his oracle against Nineveh, the Assyrian capital that had crushed Judah, by describing the LORD as jealous and avenging. The Hebrew word qanna, jealous, describes a covenant loyalty that will not tolerate a rival or overlook betrayal; naqam, avenging, is the action of a rightful judge, not petty spite.
