Nehemiah 9:1 meaning and explanation
On the twenty-fourth day of the same month, the Israelites gathered together, fasting and wearing sackcloth, with dust on their heads.
Nehemiah 9:1, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
This verse follows the reading of the Law at the Feast of Tabernacles earlier in the same seventh month, so the assembly comes only days after a season of celebration. Now the people gather for a different purpose: fasting, sackcloth and dust on the head were traditional signs of grief and repentance in the ancient Near East.
