Nehemiah 9:37 meaning and explanation

Its abundant harvest goes to the kings You have set over us because of our sins. And they rule over our bodies and our livestock as they please. We are in great distress.

Nehemiah 9:37, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

These words come near the end of a long prayer that the Levites lead on behalf of the returned exiles in Jerusalem, after Ezra reads the Law and the people confess their history. The speaker is the community itself, acknowledging that the rich harvest of the land God gave their fathers now flows to foreign kings as tribute.
