Numbers 11:5 meaning and explanation

We remember the fish we ate freely in Egypt, along with the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic.

Numbers 11:5, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

These are the words of the Israelites in the wilderness, complaining to Moses and, in effect, against the LORD who brought them out of Egypt. The Hebrew word for the fish is dagah, and the point is not the food itself but the word freely: they recall abundance while forgetting slavery.
