The Israelites have just seen Aaron’s staff sprout overnight, confirming God’s choice of Aaron and the Levites after Korah’s rebellion. Their cry in verse 13 comes from the people, not Moses, and it follows the warning that the grumbling must stop “lest they die.” Having witnessed judgment fall on those who approached God’s holy tent wrongly, they now fear that any closeness to the tabernacle means death.
