Numbers 18:23 meaning and explanation

The Levites are to perform the work of the Tent of Meeting, and they must bear their iniquity. This is a permanent statute for the generations to come. The Levites will not receive an inheritance among the Israelites.

Numbers 18:23, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The LORD is speaking to Aaron and, through Moses, to the Levites, setting out how the tabernacle will be staffed after the rebellion in chapter 16. The Levites serve at the Tent on behalf of the people, and the phrase "bear their iniquity" means they carry the responsibility and liability for any failure in that service, much as verse 1 says Aaron bears the guilt tied to the sanctuary.
