Balaam is a hired seer from Mesopotamia, summoned by Balak king of Moab to curse Israel camped on the plains below. In the previous chapter God had already turned his curses into blessings, and now, seeing that the LORD delights to bless Israel, Balaam sets aside sorcery and the Spirit of God comes upon him.
