Explanation preview
After the plague that killed thousands, God commands a new census on the plains of Moab, counting men twenty and older for military service and for dividing the land. Verse 42 turns to Dan, Jacob's son by Bilhah, and lists a single clan, the Shuhamites, descended from Shuham, also called Hushim in Genesis 46.
