After the battle against Midian, the soldiers had contracted ritual impurity by touching the dead. Eleazar the priest, speaking to the returning troops outside the camp, applies the law of purification: they must wait seven days, purify themselves and their captives on the third and seventh days, and pass metal articles through fire and water.
