After the victory over Midian, the LORD tells Moses how to divide the captured people and animals between the soldiers who actually fought and the whole Israelite congregation that stayed behind. The warriors receive the larger half, but the community also shares in the spoil, and from each half a tribute is later set aside for the LORD and for the Levites.
