After Israel’s battle against Midian, the LORD told Moses to divide the plunder between the soldiers who fought and the congregation that stayed behind. From the soldiers’ half, one out of every five hundred persons or animals was set apart, and verse 29 directs this portion to Eleazar the priest as an offering to the LORD.
