Numbers 4 assigns the Levites their duties for moving the tabernacle whenever Israel broke camp. The Gershonites, descendants of Levi through Gershon, carried the curtains, coverings, ropes and courtyard hangings rather than the most holy furnishings, which the Kohathites handled.
