Numbers 8:12 meaning and explanation
And the Levites are to lay their hands on the heads of the bulls, and offer to the LORD one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering, to make atonement for the Levites.
Numbers 8:12, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
The LORD is instructing Moses in the wilderness, and here the Levites, Israel's tribe set apart for sanctuary service, stand before the Tent of Meeting with two young bulls. Laying their hands on the animals' heads identifies them with the offerings, one a sin offering and the other a burnt offering, "to make atonement" (Hebrew kaphar, to cover or cleanse) for the Levites.
