Proverbs 31:3 meaning and explanation

Do not spend your strength on women or your vigor on those who ruin kings.

Proverbs 31:3, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

These are the words of King Lemuel, recording instruction his mother gave him, and verse 3 is her warning about misplaced strength. The Hebrew word for strength, chayil, can also mean wealth or capability, so the counsel is broader than romance: a king must not pour his resources and energy into women who would divert him from his office.
