Psalms 102:17 meaning and explanation

He will turn toward the prayer of the destitute; He will not despise their prayer.

Psalms 102:17, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The speaker is a suffering, perhaps exiled Israelite who has just described his wasted body and taunting enemies, then lifts his eyes to God's eternal throne and the promised restoration of Zion. In verse 17 the Hebrew word translated "destitute" carries the sense of one stripped bare and helpless, and the parallel line makes the point plain: God turns toward such a prayer and does not despise it.
