Psalms 110:1 meaning and explanation

A Psalm of David. The LORD said to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”

Psalms 110:1, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

David speaks here, and the psalm is attributed to him, yet he describes a conversation in which the LORD (Yahweh) addresses someone David calls "my Lord." The first word, Yahweh, is God's covenant name; the second is a different Hebrew word, adon, meaning master or lord. The command to sit at God's right hand means sharing his throne and authority, and the footstool image pictures complete victory over enemies, a common ancient Near Eastern gesture of triumph.
