Psalms 137:5 meaning and explanation

If I forget you, O Jerusalem, may my right hand cease to function.

Psalms 137:5, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The speaker is one of the exiles deported to Babylon after Jerusalem fell in 586 BC, and in the preceding verses the community has hung up its harps and refused to sing for its captors. Here the psalmist turns that refusal into a personal vow: forgetting Jerusalem would be worse than losing the use of his right hand, the hand that plays the harp and holds a weapon.
