Psalms 139:5 meaning and explanation

You hem me in behind and before; You have laid Your hand upon me.

Psalms 139:5, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

David is speaking to the LORD, and after confessing in verses 1 to 4 that God knows his sitting, rising, thoughts and every word before he speaks it, he pictures that knowledge as a kind of enclosure. The Hebrew verb behind “hem me in” means to confine or besiege, so the image is of being closed in on every side.
