Psalms 16:2 meaning and explanation

I said to the LORD, “You are my Lord; apart from You I have no good thing.”

Psalms 16:2, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

In this psalm David speaks to God as his Lord, using the covenant name LORD (Yahweh) and then the more personal title "my Lord." The setting is a prayer of trust: David has just asked God to preserve him because he takes refuge in him. Here he confesses that every good thing he has comes from God and depends on him, not on his own strength or merit.
