Psalms 22:20 meaning and explanation
Deliver my soul from the sword, my precious life from the power of wild dogs.
Psalms 22:20, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
In this psalm David cries out from deep distress, surrounded by enemies he pictures as bulls, lions and dogs. Verse 20 is a direct plea: “Deliver my soul from the sword, my precious life from the power of wild dogs.” The soul here means the whole living self, and precious life renders a Hebrew word for one’s only life, the single life that cannot be replaced.
