David prays this after Nathan confronted him about Bathsheba, so the plea comes from a man who knows his guilt is real and his own heart cannot be repaired by effort. The Hebrew verb bara, "create," is the same word used of God's creation in Genesis, and it is a verb whose subject is always God.
