Psalms 51:6 meaning and explanation

Surely You desire truth in the inmost being; You teach me wisdom in the inmost place.

Psalms 51:6, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Psalm 51 is David's prayer after Nathan confronted him over Bathsheba, and in verse 6 he turns from confession to what God actually looks for. The Hebrew word translated "inmost being" is literally "the covered places" or hidden parts, and the parallel line repeats the idea with "the inmost place." David is saying that God wants truth and wisdom not only in outward actions but in the concealed depths of a person, the very place where his sin began.
