Psalm 52 is David's response to Doeg the Edomite, who reported David's visit to Ahimelech the priest and then slaughtered the priests of Nob (1 Samuel 21 to 22). In verse 4 David addresses the deceitful tongue itself, personifying it as a destructive power that relishes words which swallow up and ruin others.
