Psalms 70:3 meaning and explanation

May those who say, “Aha, aha!” retreat because of their shame.

Psalms 70:3, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

David is praying under pressure, surrounded by enemies who mock him with the taunt “Aha, aha!” This cry is the sound of gloating, the same Hebrew exclamation used elsewhere when foes celebrate a person’s downfall. David does not ask to take revenge himself; he asks God to let the mockers’ own contempt collapse into shame, so that their jeering ends in retreat.
