Explanation preview
Revelation 18:12 falls within the merchants' lament over Babylon the great, the symbolic city whose fall an angel announces and over which kings, merchants and sailors mourn. John's readers in Asia Minor knew Rome's wealth and its long-distance luxury trade, so the list is a catalogue of the city's imports: precious metals and gems, dyed cloth and silk, carved woods, ivory, bronze, iron and marble.
