Explanation preview
John is describing the New Jerusalem, the holy city that comes down from God, and he echoes Isaiah 60:19 and Zechariah 14:7, where the Lord himself becomes his people's light. The verse pictures a city where darkness, whether from night or from the need for lamps and sun, has been replaced by God's own shining presence.
