These are the words of the risen Christ, spoken through John to the church in Laodicea, a wealthy city whose members had grown self satisfied. The image draws on something the first hearers knew well: nearby Colossae had cold, refreshing water, and Hierapolis had hot springs, but Laodicea's own water arrived lukewarm and was easy to spit out.
