Romans 11:33 meaning and explanation

O, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments, and untraceable His ways!

Romans 11:33, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Paul has just traced God's dealings with Israel and the Gentiles through eleven chapters of argument, and this verse is his outburst of praise at the end of it. The Greek word bathos means depth, and Paul piles up terms for God's riches, wisdom and knowledge because he has just described a plan he could not fully explain: Israel hardened, Gentiles grafted in, mercy shown to all.
