Romans 4:11 meaning and explanation

And he received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. So then, he is the father of all who believe but are not circumcised, in order that righteousness might be credited to them.

Romans 4:11, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Paul argues that Abraham was declared righteous by God through faith before he was circumcised, since Genesis records the covenant sign coming later. Here Paul calls circumcision a sign and a seal, meaning it marked and confirmed a righteousness Abraham already possessed by believing God's promise.
