Romans 8:20 meaning and explanation
For the creation was subjected to futility, not by its own will, but because of the One who subjected it, in hope
Romans 8:20, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
Paul is speaking to the believers in Rome about the whole created order, personified as waiting and groaning for release. Creation did not choose its own condition; God subjected it to futility, a Greek word (mataiotes) meaning frustration or purposelessness, likely recalling Genesis 3, where the ground is cursed because of human sin.
