Zephaniah 2:13 meaning and explanation

And He will stretch out His hand against the north and destroy Assyria; He will make Nineveh a desolation, as dry as a desert.

Zephaniah 2:13, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The prophet Zephaniah speaks in the late seventh century BC, when Assyria still dominated the ancient Near East from its capital Nineveh, and he announces that God will stretch out his hand against the north, the direction from which Assyria threatened Judah. Nineveh's desolation as dry desert is striking, since the city sat beside the Tigris with lush surroundings.
