Zephaniah 3:1 meaning and explanation

Woe to the city of oppressors, rebellious and defiled!

Zephaniah 3:1, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

The prophet Zephaniah speaks to Jerusalem, the covenant city, in the years before Babylon destroyed it. The Hebrew word rendered “woe” is a cry of judgment, and the three accusations are aimed at God’s own people: she is rebellious toward God, defiled by sin, and oppressive toward the weak within her.
