Explanation preview
The men of Jabesh-gilead owed Saul a debt: early in his reign he had rescued their city from Nahash the Ammonite (1 Samuel 11). Now, after the Philistines displayed Saul's head and armor in the temple of Dagon, these warriors risk a night march into occupied territory to recover the bodies of Saul and his sons and give them burial under the oak at Jabesh, followed by seven days of fasting.
