Genesis 35:8 meaning and explanation

Now Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died and was buried under the oak below Bethel. So Jacob named it Allon-bachuth.

Genesis 35:8, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Deborah was Rebekah's nurse, and she had likely come with Rebekah from Paddan-aram long before. Her death is recorded here as Jacob's family settles near Bethel, and Jacob buries her under an oak and names the place Allon-bachuth, which in Hebrew means "oak of weeping." The brief notice shows that grief belonged even to the household of promise, and it links the family's story to Rebekah, who had sent Jacob away and never saw him again.
