1 Kings 1:53 meaning and explanation

So King Solomon summoned Adonijah down from the altar, and he came and bowed down before King Solomon, who said to him, “Go to your home.”

1 Kings 1:53, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Solomon has just been anointed king at Gihon, and his rival half brother Adonijah, who had proclaimed himself king at a feast near En Rogel, has fled in fear and grasped the horns of the altar, the place where a fugitive could appeal for mercy. Solomon's summons brings him down from that refuge, and his bowing is a public admission that the throne is no longer his.
