1 Kings 20:18 meaning and explanation

“If they have marched out in peace,” he said, “take them alive. Even if they have marched out for war, take them alive.”

1 Kings 20:18, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Ben-hadad, king of Aram, is besieging Samaria and drinking with his thirty-two allied kings when scouts report men marching out of the city. His order in verse 18 is casual and overconfident: whether the Israelites come out to surrender or to fight, his men should simply take them alive.
