1 Peter 2:20 meaning and explanation

How is it to your credit if you are beaten for doing wrong and you endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God.

1 Peter 2:20, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Peter writes to Christians scattered across Asia Minor, many of them servants in households where masters held great power, and in verses 18 to 25 he addresses those servants directly. Here he draws a distinction his readers would have understood: enduring punishment you deserve earns nothing, but enduring suffering you did not deserve, because you are conscious of God, is something God sees and honors.
