Samuel, brought up at Endor through the medium, speaks these words to Saul, who has come to him in terror because the Philistine army is gathered against Israel and the LORD has stopped answering him by dreams, Urim or prophets. Samuel's question is pointed: Saul has already been told that the kingship was torn from him, so consulting a dead prophet cannot reverse what God has decided.
