carried it into the temple of Dagon, and set it beside his statue.

1 Samuel 5:2, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

After Israel's defeat at Ebenezer, the Philistines captured the ark and brought it to Ashdod, one of their five chief cities, placing it in the temple of Dagon, their grain and storm god. Setting a conquered people's sacred chest beside a national deity displayed the defeated God as a trophy rather than honoring him.
