2 Kings 9:18 meaning and explanation

So a horseman rode off to meet Jehu and said, “This is what the king asks: ‘Have you come in peace?’” “What do you know about peace?” Jehu replied. “Fall in behind me.” And the watchman reported, “The messenger reached them, but he is not coming back.”

2 Kings 9:18, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

Joram, wounded and recovering at Jezreel, sends a rider to ask whether Jehu's approaching troops come in peace. Jehu, freshly anointed by Elisha's young prophet to overthrow Ahab's house, answers with a sharp retort: "What do you know about peace?" The Hebrew word shalom carries the sense of wholeness and well being, and Jehu denies it can exist while Jezebel's idolatry and witchcraft continue.
