Acts 1:12 meaning and explanation

Then they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, which is near the city, a Sabbath day’s journey away.

Acts 1:12, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

After the ascension, the disciples obey Jesus' command not to leave Jerusalem and travel back from the Mount of Olives, the hill east of the city where the ascension took place. Luke notes the distance as "a Sabbath day's journey," a common Jewish measure for how far one might walk on the Sabbath, roughly two thousand cubits, showing the mount was close to the city.
