Acts 1:26, Berean Standard Bible

Explanation preview

After Peter sets out the requirement that a replacement must have witnessed Jesus from John's baptism to the ascension, the gathered believers propose two men, Joseph Barsabbas and Matthias, and pray that the Lord will show which one He has chosen. Casting lots was a familiar Old Testament way of seeking God's decision, used for dividing land and assigning temple duties, and here it settles the choice.
