as the high priest and the whole Council can testify about me. I even obtained letters from them to their brothers in Damascus, and I was on my way to apprehend these people and bring them to Jerusalem to be punished.
Acts 22:5, Berean Standard Bible
Explanation preview
Paul is speaking to a Jerusalem crowd that has just tried to kill him, and he is recounting his own history to show he once stood exactly where they stand. The high priest and the Council, the Sanhedrin, could confirm what he says: he had carried letters authorizing him to arrest followers of the Way in Damascus and bring them back for punishment.
