Amos has just announced that God has sworn by Himself to hand Samaria over to destruction (verses 7 and 8). Verse 9 follows that sentence with a picture of the aftermath: even if ten men are crowded into a single house, hoping that numbers or hiding will keep them safe, they too will die.
